Forest School Autumn 2018

Sophia getting acquainted with the forest

Forest school started this week. And we had the most wonderful time. Sophia explored with new little friends and she learnt the word Fox after finding this mother and baby hiding in a tree. Sophia is learning the word mine and I love how she is holding the foxes and was saying ‘mine, mine’.  Have I mentioned she fills my heart with glee?

I decided to take Sophia to forest school after spending quite a bit of time over the summer as screen time.  Raising babies/children/teens of the technology era has made me very aware of their increasing need to switch off and unplug from it all.  I think that’s why we are seeing activities like forest schools popping up more.  Children do need to enjoy a childhood filled with nature to feel truly contented and connected to their authentic selves, discovering who they are away from a virtual world.

For me forest school is also a place where I will model the behaviour of switching off and not using my phone too.  Being a present and mindful parent for Sophia so that can see first-hand what that looks like.  Instead we shall be honing in on the senses -of smell, touch and visualisation of the forest, the animals and plants and (eventually) making fires and dens.  I want our experience with forest school to set her imagination free and give her a sense of endless opportunity and curiosity about the world and the woodlands.

I was very impressed with our little forest school. There seemed to be an activity for all ages, a mud kitchen for the little ones and a hunt for a letter and a task set by the woodland squirrels for the bigger ones.  The woods were a bit gloomy today but when we got hot chocolate and biscuits to dunk it bought a real warmth to us both.  I love the idea that Sophia will learn about our seasons too by seeing the different weathers and temperatures throughout the year.

Since Forest school Sophia has tried to dunk everything in my drinks for the remainder of the week including successfully dunking her sandwich in my tea after gymnastics class yesterday😂😂😂 this particularly made me laugh which sent Sophia into fits so now she’s encouraged to do it even more so ……I’d watch your drink around her right now if I was you!

Learning to dunk her biscuit in hot chocolate - an essential life skill don’t you think!
